Restoration of an old Japanese garden in Scotland
The restoration of a Japanese Garden which was built in an early 20th Century. The layout
and features of the garden were designed by Raymond Berrow for Hugh Micklem in 1919 and are
modelled closely on 'Hill Garden - finished style' in Joseph Condor's Landscape Gardening in Japan.
The 0.3acre rectangular site lies just to the east of Sevenoaks in the small village of Bitchet Green, and
is now within the residential curtilage of Lantern Cottage. Together with the client, we produced an Conservation management plan to sympathetically restore the Japanese garden and to create a space that is safe for the enjoyment of the owners and their guests and finally to document and safeguard the garden for the long term.
Between 2016 and 2019, several structural pruning to trees and shrubs were carried out to restore the planting as close as the original proportion.
